You’ve probably planned what you will do if one of your family members is infected with the H1N1 virus, but have you thought about how to handle the virus in your workplace?
One step all employers can take is to educate their employees on the basics of how flu viruses are spread and encourage employees to take appropriate precautions. Your health insurance company is a good resource for general information about the H1N1 virus as well as symptoms and methods to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Now is also a good time to review whether some jobs can be performed off site and, if so, work with your employment attorney to develop the appropriate policies and protocols. Review your sick leave policies and determine whether there are some incentives you can offer employees to discourage them from reporting to work when sick.
Finally, for those employers subject to the Oregon Family Leave Act (“OFLA”) or the Family Medical Leave Act (“FMLA”), be sure your processes are current and that they comply with the law.
